Baby Tips for New Moms

Build a routine early

Babies will start to develop routines very early. Pay special attention to your baby and start building a unique routine around your baby. Your baby won’t always stick to your perfectly planned schedule.

However, having a sleep or eat and play routine can help keep track of everything from patterns to sleep and feedings. This can help you take control of your life when things are very chaotic right now. There are multiple great apps to help you remember when baby ate last, how much, etc to help you too!

Be ready for your entire life to change

As a new mom, you might have a mindset of trying to do everything yourself. The truth is that you won’t be able to do all the things you used to do while your baby is still this young. You might have to forego the empty sink for one filled with dishes or a sleep routine that would make other people scream. Your entire life is about changing for the better, and those first few years will completely turn any routines or usual upside down!

Embrace those changes and remember that this is a season of life that will one day pass. I remember being in the trenches of new motherhood with 2 littles only 18 months apart when I was 24. While most days my house was clean, there were MANY days I was just too exhausted to wash the dishes or put up the laundry. And that is ok mama!

Find 40 minutes a day for you time

Find ten minutes a day to do the following: take a walk, take a shower, drink a cup of coffee, and respond to your messages. This might sound silly, but this will give you some time to be more than just a mom for a little bit. This time can be while your baby is down for a nap, while grandma is visiting, or even while your husband is home to help out. Whatever time that you get, take advantage of it!

I didn’t give myself anytime when my 10 year old was a baby and felt awful. Once I had my daughter 18 months later, I knew I needed a few minutes every single day to just breathe. We don’t and didn’t live near family, so I would get the kids set up with their toys and just sit for a few minutes to sip my coffee.

Make smart choices with your food

What you eat is just as important for you as it is for your baby! You will be up on your feet most of the day, breastfeeding for what feels like forever, and so much more. Make sure that you are eating nutritious foods high in protein to help you stay energized as much as you can, and drink plenty of water. This will not only make breastfeeding easier, but it will help you stay healthy too.

If you’re crunched on time like most moms are, don’t stress! There’s multiple easy tInstant Pot and Crockpot recipes that are also healthy. If you’re over cooking, check out meal delivery services, like Factor or Hello Fresh.

Remember that this craziness is only temporary

Having a baby is a crazy time in every mom’s life. So remember that all the craziness that is currently going on in your life is just temporary. This first year will be tough on you as both a mom and as a person, but you will get to enjoy all the fun parents of motherhood, too, like snuggles and first words.

While your baby might not be here for a little while, these tips will help you prepare for the baby and make sure you are ready to go when the day comes.

These are great tips. I would emphasize new parents to definitely have some time for themselves while baby is sleeping. This can decrease stress and help cope with new responsibilities. Having a doula near you can help ease that and plan a healthy routine.
