family vacation fargo north dakota Mid-August Chris decided he wanted us to get out of town for Labor Day weekend…and picked Fargo, ND.

To be honest, I was like well…ok, let’s give it a shot. But then I started googling! Y’all, there’s so much to do there and it’s such a great little area. The downtown was so clean and had the prettiest murals on the bulk of the walls. The locals were beyond friendly, like on par with classic Southern hospitality.

A Weekend in Fargo

We stayed at Home2 Suites a few minutes away from downtown, close to all of the bigger chains. The breakfast was SO delicious and our room was perfect. Traveling with 3 kids always makes things interesting, but this wasn’t stressful whatsoever. The room had a kitchen set up, so we were able to wash all of Emm’s cups and keep milk for him in the fridge. Seriously made our stay that much easier!

Chris and I are big fans of the movie and show Fargo. He had never seen it when we first started dating, so I made him watch it with him eons ago and of course, he loved it! If you haven’t seen it, it’s more on the dark humor side. The woodchipper is a big part of it towards the end and how fun, they have it at the Fargo Visitor’s Center! You know we couldn’t miss checking it out!

Always fans of checking out local places, we headed to Nichole’s Fine Pastry & Cafe to order an overabundance of utter deliciousness. Seriously, if you don’t order at least 5 different dishes from a restaurant, have you truly tried it?! We all loved it, but especially Savannah. She ate so much of one of the chocolate pastries. We went to a few other local coffee shops, which were awesome y’all. Love the vibes from small places.

And you can’t go out of town without trying tasty dessert only places! We went to the BEST ice cream shoppe ever! Ok, so we went twice. HA It was that good y’all! The Silver Lining Creamery has some of the creamiest ice cream I’ve ever had. Not only that, but they make their own ice cream in 2.5 gallon batches so it’s incredibly fresh too. I’m still daydreaming about the Brown Bread ice cream I got the last time we went there.

Is it weird to drive four hours just for ice cream? Asking for a friend, of course.

We checked out their local zoo too! While small, the Red River Zoo was adorable. All three kids enjoyed themselves immensely! They had a little playground and a ton of great kid-friendly exhibits as well as an assortment of animals. I think the kid’s favorite animals were the horse and rabbits though.

We spent a good chunk of time at Bonanzaville in West Fargo. Oh my goodness y’all, it was fantastic! The main building had a museum showing the history of Fargo and its residents. It was amazing to see how people used to live, especially in such a remote area.

Once you walk out of that building and into the rest of the property, you get to see so much! It’s like a life size interactive experience since you get to go into actual homes and buildings that used to be in various parts of Fargo. I can’t even begin to tell you how much we enjoyed it! Each building was well labeled inside and outside with great vintage artifacts.

One building had a slew of old carriages and sleighs that just amazed the kids. They couldn’t believe that was how people got around before car’s. It was a fantastic and educational stop during our weekend.

Fargo certainly surprised us with how fun it was and we definitely can’t wait to go back!

Loved that the zoo had a great set up for the nursing and pumping mamas! As a former pumper, I really appreciate this.
