Classic Southern Recipes

Deviled Eggs

Deviled eggs are perfect for gatherings, dinner parties and holidays. The classic southern deviled eggs recipe involves boiling and slicing the eggs. Next, you are going to mix the yolks with mustard, mayonnaise and sweet pickle relish. You can also add a little salt and pepper. Once you scoop the mixture into the egg, you can top it off with some paprika. If you want to jazz it up a bit, try these Loaded Deviled Eggs from The Cookie Rookie. We love them!

Fried Green Tomato BLT

A southern spin on the traditional BLT sandwich, some ingredients of the green tomato BLT recipe include fried green tomatoes, cooked bacon and Bibb or Boston lettuce leaves. It also includes ranch salad dressing, green onions and dill to give it a little kick. You can serve your BLT as a sandwich on bread or a bun, or you can serve it over torn greens to create a healthier option.

Fresh Peach Cobbler

If you are looking for classic southern recipes that are more on the sweet side, look no further than fresh peach cobbler. It is the perfect dessert for daily meals and special occasions. The ingredients include peaches, butter, baking powder, flour, milk, sugar, salt and lemon juice. You also have the option of adding nutmeg or cinnamon. The best part is you can substitute the peaches for your favorite in-season fruit as needed.

Classic Southern Dressing

The classic Thanksgiving debate, except in my house, is dressing vs stuffing. While stuffing is typically a bit drier of a dish, it is traditionally stuffed inside a turkey or chicken. Dressing on the other hand is a moist bread based dish that is baked separately. In my house we serve dressing during the holidays and usually enjoy it with gravy or cranberry sauce. So good y’all!

Southern Collard Greens

You have probably been told to eat your greens a million times, but you have never tasted anything like southern collard greens. Collard greens belong to the Brassica oleracea plant species, and this southern recipe involves cooking your greens in a broth that has been infused with delicious flavors such as garlic, onions and ham hock. If you want to give your greens a little kick, add apple cider vinegar and red pepper flakes to the mix. Southern collard greens is the perfect side dish in your southern meal! I love them served over fresh cornbread with vinegar on top. Perfection!

Southern Fried Chicken

Last, but certainly not least, southern fried chicken is one of the most popular classic southern recipes of all time. While you may enjoy fried chicken from your favorite fast food joint, there is nothing like a plate of homemade southern fried chicken to make your taste buds happy. It is crunchy yet juicy, and it is certain to hit the spot. You can even add Tabasco or hot sauce to your fried chicken to give it a more spicy flavor. Serve your southern fried chicken with sides such as southern collard greens, mashed potatoes or cornbread to create a tasty meal.

There are so many classic southern recipes to choose from, you may decide to combine several dishes as one meal. Imagine southern fried chicken with collard greens followed by a dessert of peach cobbler.

If you are looking to stick with comfort and tradition while in the kitchen, be sure to add a few classic southern meals to your recipe box!
