Fall is an awkward time of year. It’s cold in the mornings and evenings, but it’s still pretty warm during the day. Depending on where you live, you may not be packing up your summer shorts just yet. However, it won’t be long before you do!
Building a fall and winter capsule wardrobe has saved me the trouble of spending weeks packing up my clothes, and I always have stylish outfits ready for the upcoming season! If you are looking to put together your own fall or winter capsule wardrobe, here is everything you need to know!
Pare down your clothes
This one is tough for me because I love clothes! It’s hard for me to say no to a good cardigan or scarf when out shopping. However, it would not be a capsule wardrobe if your closet were bursting from the seams! The first step is to pare down your clothes to just the items that you love. These are versatile, comfortable, and ones that you continue to wear all the time. Rule of thumb is if it doesn’t fit, you haven’t worn it in over a year or it doesn’t make you feel amazing- toss it. Donate it, sell it via consignment or give it to a friend. Life is too short to feel frumpy!
Layers, layers, layers
You would be surprised just how warm a scarf or a light jacket can keep you during the fall months! On a chilly day, layers are what will help keep you warm! Layers are a must in any fall or winter capsule wardrobe, so rather than putting your focus on tops and bottoms, think of the layers. You can pick up patterned and solid scarves & hats in a variety of shades to coordinate with everything in your closet.
Set hard limits on your clothing items
This one is hard to do! Especially when you don’t have a set number in mind. Setting hard limits on your clothing will help keep your clothes in check during the winter and fall months! If you find a sweater you like and don’t have any more room in your allotted amount, something has to be swapped. This will keep your capsule wardrobe from getting too big, but still, allow you to swap as you’d like.
Be realistic about your weather and what you need
What kind of weather do you get where you live? If you live in Florida, you probably aren’t going to need snow gear. If you live in Colorado, you will likely need a much heavier jacket than someone who lives in Arizona. Know and understand what the weather is like where you live to put together your wardrobe accordingly! You’ll be a lot happier building your fall and winter capsule wardrobe around YOUR live and not what you wish the weather would be like.
Use layers to transition into other seasons
A sweater over a cute top can instantly turn a light, and breezy fall look into a cozy winter look! Adding a scarf and some mittens can dress up a dress that was once made for fall. Look for layers that can help transition your fall capsule wardrobe into the winter season and even into spring if you can! This will help create a more versatile wardrobe for you.
