Denim
Jeans. We all wear them. Most of us love them, although it can be hard to find a cut that works for our body types. Thankfully we now have denim that is comfortable, easy to wear and stylish. It’s a big ask, but these brands have delivered. Skinny jeans have been fading in popularity over the last few years, while straight leg, tapered vintage cuts and flares have re-emerged as the go to style for many. I personally love how figure flattering it is on everyone, even curvy shorties like myself.
Pants
Pants other than jeans? Yes! For a more casual look, faux leather leggings are still in. I have both the Spanx version and the Walmart Time and Tru version. For a more dressier look, straight ponte pants are fantastic. Wider leg trousers are having a moment as well and look great paired with a silky blouse or fitted tank and blazer. Think menswear, but cut for a women’s body.
Outerwear
With fall comes leaves changing and brisk temperatures, which means you need to have sturdy outerwear. While cozy puffers and long coats are a winter staple, fall doesn’t usually require such heavy outerwear. Classics like blazers, trench coats and peacoats are always “in” and look wonderful on everyone. They also go with everything, from jeans and sneakers to that gorgeous LBD. This year the “shacket” {heavy flannel shirt jacket} is back again, while the “coatigan” is a new trend for 2022.
Tops
While crop tops are still very much a thing, for fall they aren’t as popular. Cropped sweaters are coming back, but they’re paired with high waisted pants to stay cozy. I personally love a classic button down – it can take you just about anywhere – and a cute statement blouse. Of course graphic tees are always in, as are the basics – solid tees that pair well with cardigans, blazers and more.
Dresses
Dresses are a year round staple, however the fall sister of the summer dress is much warmer and looks fabulous paired with boots of varying heights. Sweater dresses, wrap dresses and vintage inspired corduroy jumpers are spot on for this fall, as are mock neck shirt dresses. When paired with boots and warm outerwear, they make for the perfect outfit for work or brunch.
Shoes
Fall is officially the kick off to boot season! I know I love wearing them and love how they can elongate even the shortest of legs. The Chelsea boot that was popular last fall is still very much in. What’s new and trending this year is the western look, with more of a pointed, rather than rounded, toe. Flats never go out of style, although depending on where you live, they aren’t the most sensible of shoe choice once it gets truly frigid.
Accessories
Who else remembers the absolute chokehold bubble necklaces had on us in 2012? I’m so glad that’s no longer the in look, although I had my fair share of them in my wardrobe. This fall, gold is very much in. Gold hoops, from thin to heavier, layered gold necklaces and delicate collarbone resting pieces are the trend. Lucky me, I’ve always been a huge fan of gold.
Sunglasses are varied, from the 90s inspired to the big, bold Jackie O style. You really can’t go wrong with any style.
While the belt bag has been in for a few years, it’s still a top trend. Thankfully they’re MUCH cuter than their brethren of yesteryear {anyone remember the mid90s slouchy dad version?} and incredibly affordable. You can snag a basic black one, perfect with leggings, for less than $20 on Amazon. I’m still a fan of larger totes, like this one from Kate Spade.
With all that being said, style is what YOU make it. Fashion trends change, but your style is what makes you, you. I hope you take this style guide as what it is- mere suggestions to aid you in picking pieces that make you happy and feel amazing.
